Taylor Foresi leads with 3 goals, Sharks hold Patriots to 1 goal in 2nd half

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's lacrosse team (1-0) downed George Mason University (0-2), 9-6, in its season opener on Monday afternoon at Shark Stadium. Trailing at halftime, LIU held George Mason to one second-half score. Taylor Foresi led the Sharks with three goals.

The victory is LIU's first in a season opener versus a non-conference opponent in the Sharks era.

LIU trailed 5-2 at halftime, before rattling off seven consecutive goals in the second half while holding GMU scoreless for more than 28 minutes. The Patriots did not score again until 3:08 remaining in the game.

Along with Foresi, Julia Trainor (2), Abigail Hughes, Ava Hernandez, Catherine Batterberry, and Kate Ross all scored for the Sharks. Ross, a freshman who scored her first career goal, put LIU ahead 6-5 late in the third quarter, capping the comeback and giving the Sharks a lead they did not relinquish.

Hernandez and Selia Lyons each added two assists. Goalkeeper Skyler Fig made eight saves.

The Sharks outshot the Patriots, 27-26, including a 16-12 edge in shots on goal, and led in groundballs, 13-9.
