BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's lacrosse team (1-0) downed George Mason University (0-2), 9-6, in its season opener on Monday afternoon at Shark Stadium. Trailing at halftime, LIU held George Mason to one second-half score.
Taylor Foresi led the Sharks with three goals.
The victory is LIU's first in a season opener versus a non-conference opponent in the Sharks era.
LIU trailed 5-2 at halftime, before rattling off seven consecutive goals in the second half while holding GMU scoreless for more than 28 minutes. The Patriots did not score again until 3:08 remaining in the game.

Abigail Hughes,
Ava Hernandez,
Catherine Batterberry, and
Kate Ross all scored for the Sharks. Ross, a freshman who scored her first career goal, put LIU ahead 6-5 late in the third quarter, capping the comeback and giving the Sharks a lead they did not relinquish.
Hernandez and
Selia Lyons each added two assists. Goalkeeper
Skyler Fig made eight saves.
The Sharks outshot the Patriots, 27-26, including a 16-12 edge in shots on goal, and led in groundballs, 13-9.
LIU returns to action on Friday, Feb. 13, at Saint Bonaventure University. Opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m.
