Women’s Volleyball Powers Past FDU for 12th Straight Win

HACKENSACK, N.J. — Women's volleyball extended its winning streak to 12 matches Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of FDU at the Bogota Savings Bank Center. The Sharks won 25-20, 29-27, 25-13 to improve to 12-7 overall and remain unbeaten in NEC play at 8-0.

The win completed a two-match weekend sweep of the Knights following Friday's five-set win.

Bella Correia led four Sharks in double figures with 17 kills. Sara van Gisteren recorded a double-double with 13 kills and a match-high 20 digs. Sara Garcia delivered 11 kills without an attack error, hitting .579 on 19 attempts. Yasmeen Muhammad added 10 kills and hit .308.

Dilara Elmacioglu directed the offense with 46 assists, 10 digs and two service aces.

LIU took control late in the opening set. Leading 18-17, the Sharks scored six consecutive points behind four kills from Correia, a kill from Garcia and an ace from Reese Teves. Correia then finished the set with a kill to secure the 25-20 win.

The Sharks showed their resilience in the second set, erasing a seven-point deficit after trailing 13-20. LIU rallied to take a 23-21 lead before the teams traded points down the stretch.

Facing set point at 26-27, LIU scored the final three points. An FDU setting error tied the score before Miabella Musignac delivered an ace. Correia and Muhammad combined for a block to finish the 29-27 comeback.

LIU carried that momentum into the third set. A six-point run extended a 6-4 lead to 12-4, and the Sharks never looked back. They hit .415 with 19 kills and just two attack errors in the final set. Correia supplied the match-clinching kill.

The Sharks finished with a 57-34 advantage in kills and outdug FDU 71-62. Teves contributed 17 digs and seven assists. Musignac added 10 digs and two aces.

LIU returns to the Brooklyn Athletic Center to host Central Connecticut State on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. The teams meet again Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.
