Brooklyn, N.Y. - Long Island University volleyball recruit Vanessa Gemignani was recently named a 2009 Pikes Peak Rotary Champion. Gemignani, who will join the Blackbirds for the 2009 season, was a Medallion winner who was honored when the Rotary Champions Foundation assembled the finest scholar-athletes in the Pikes Peak region – a reward given to young men and women who embody the spirit of champions.

The annual honor is bestowed upon scholar-athletes who excel in the community, in the classroom and on the playing fields and courts. Students are nominated by coaches, teachers or administrators within the Pikes Peak region and voted on by the Rotary Champions Foundation Board. Gemignani was selected as the volleyball Medallion winner out of a group of over 25 nominees. United States gold-medal winning volleyball coach Hugh McCuthchen presented the award.
